ASA Medals Challenge Awards

Swimmers must be Stage 7 or above.

Bronze Challenge

 Part A

All pieces of criteria MUST be completed in the same session 1 after the other in the order listed, without stopping or making contact with the side or pool floor

  • To jump into water that is at least as deep as the swimmer is tall
  • Tread water in a vertical position for three minutes
  • Swim 10m, followed by a surface dive into water that is at least as deep as the swimmer can reach when standing upright. The swim 5m underwater before surfacing
  • Scull head-first on the back for 15m with the feet at, or near the surface
  • Climb out at the deep end without assistance.

Part B

  • Swim 400m using two different strokes. Changes of stroke can only occur at the completion of a length of the pool. A minimum of 100m is to be swum using each stroke
  • Climb out at the deep end without assistance

Silver Challenge

Part A

All pieces of criteria MUST be completed in the same session 1 after the other in the order listed, without stopping or making contact with the side or pool floor

  • Swim 100m in less than 3 minutes using any number of strokes. A change of stroke may only occur at the completion of each length- Plunge dive into water that is at least as deep as the swimmer can reach when at full stretch
  • Tread water for two minutes with one hand behind the back
  • Scull head-first on the back for 10m and return by sculling feet-first. A horizontal position must be maintained throughout
  • Swim 10m, followed immediately by two surface-dives into water that is at least as deep as the height the swimmer can reach. One of the dives must be head first and the other must be feet first. On each occasion, an object must be retrieved from the pool floor

Part B 

  • Swim 800m. 400m of the swim must be on the front and 400m must be on the back. A change of stroke may only occur every 50m
  • Climb out at the deep end without assistance

Gold Challenge:

 Part A

All pieces of criteria MUST be completed in the same session 1 after the other in the order listed, without stopping or making contact with the side or pool floor.

  • Plunge dive into water that that is at least as deep as the swimmer can reach when at full stretch. This is followed by a 100m swim that must be completed within 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Two different strokes must be used; 50 metres of each
  • Tread water for 3 minutes with 1 hand remaining above the head throughout. The arm raised may be changed no more than 5 times
  • Swim 10m, perform a forward somersault without touching the pool bottom and continue to swim in the same direction for a further 5m.
  • Scull head-first on the track for 10m, move into a tucked position and turn through 360° keeping the head above water. Return to the starting position by sculling feet-first with the feet at or near the surface throughout and the hands at, or near the surface throughout and the hands close to the hips

Part B

  • Swim 800m using 3 of the following strokes: frontcrawl, backstroke and breaststroke, butterfly, English backstroke or sidestroke. Each stroke must be swum for a minimum of 200m. A change of stroke may only occur every 100m. The whole swim must be completed with 25 minutes.
